the parkmobile: a portable, traveling, shared park

about:
While working on LA Park[ing] Day 2008 I was shocked to find that my neighborhood of Mar Vista, Los Angeles was considered, among many in LA, to be an area with the greatest need for new parks. I personally live within walking distance of a wonderful park, but the majority of Mar Vistans, and indeed Angelenos, do not. In fact, the Trust for Public Land (TPL) estimates that only 36% of all Los Angeles County children live within one quarter of a mile of a park, compared to Boston's 97% and New York's 91%. It saddens me that Los Angeles came in dead last in this 2004 study of seven major US cities conducted by the TPL.

project:
In response, I'd like to create a portable park to bring green, public spaces to underserved areas. The park would be designed with a variety of Southern Californian native species that thrive in containers. These container plants would be arranged to best suit each location with a focus on beauty, rest, play, shade and color. Each parkmobile would have an area it serves and a schedule of locations, visiting each for temporary period for perhaps two days, two weeks or two months. Ideally, this project would temporarily revitalize the many vacent lots in the area.
